When manifestation and result are critical, the will can be aided by the use of intense emotion, or Gnosis, to seal one's desire and create result without lust.
Much is writ as of late on the Law of Attraction, a universal precept which, like Gnosis, is familiar to anyone involved in Occultism. However, when dealing with tangible results, success can prove fleeting due to conflicting wills and desire. An example of a conflicting will is the will to lose weight vs. the will to eat that exquisite piece of chocolate that's been calling to you for hours. Such tension creates its own etheric entity and generally the stronger of the two desires (usually this is the most immediate rather than sustainable) will prevail.
In situations like chocolate and weight loss, it's far easier to see the conflict and consciously head it off at the pass (given enough strength of will and clarity of foresight). In other instances, the nuances are more subtle and less refined. Binding the will to the desired result through Gnosis can prove an invaluable tool in the life of even the most seasoned practioner, regardless of dogma or creed.
Gnosis is a blanket term in the occult sense defined as arousing the state of mind to such a crescendo that all thought ceases and one experiences only sensation. Other aspects for this state include the Buddhist 'No-mind', 'One Mind' or 'Sartori'. The closest approximation within a conscious framework would be the point of orgasm, where the physical sensory input overrides mental consciousness leaving one in a pure state of bliss. Other points of Gnosis are attainable and generally include any heightened sense of awareness where the mind surrenders to the state. This is one of the most difficult aspects of occultism to obtain, but through practice and meditation, well within anyone's grasp.
Whatever works well, works without attention. On the one hand, this is the state of consciousness where active principles such as deep trust and unwavering faith are effective because the practioner in question has trained the mind to submit to the higher principle of the will. This means effectively that one petitions for a certain want or thing with an intense desire - and then forgets it assuming that it is done. This is a consistent principle in most religions and its efficacy holds as true in magickal practices as well.
On the other hand, sublimation of desire into Gnosis is an equally effective principle which allows the Mage to focus his or her attention intensely on the desire until such a state is reached that it is hurled through the veils and into the realm of the creative itself.
Where all things are created and manifested, of course.
A few consistent methods for establishing Gnosis include:
